PERFUME ALCHEMY
Mistresses of Perfume Arts Reveal Their Secrets
Lady Sara Cunningham, Iona Miller & Libby Patterson, (c)2011-2013
ETHEREAL SPIRITS: The history of fragrances is as old as old as the history of humanity. Who knows when the first person noticed they could rub a pleasant scent onto their skin to good effect? Ancient recipes can evoke mystic even ancestral memories from the cauldron of the unconscious, temporarily transporting us to by-gone times. As essence, perfumery is intimately related to alchemy with its primary process of distillation of gross materials into fine. Fragrant oils, some of which survived millennia in their ancient bottles, are among the most cherished items ever produced by mankind.
WISDOM ART: Perfumery is an olfactory art form -- a Tantric and Hermetic art. When it is personalized in a signature scent, and used for balancing the personality, it adds another dimension of pleasure to life -- one that is shared with others. Naturally, organic perfumes best replicate the essence of by-gone eras. Pure organic scents are naturally the most attractive and inspiring, and work best with the body's chemistry.
ELAN VITAL: Most esoteric perfumery books are based on the Doctrine of Signatures. But the fragrances of many essences differ in effect from the healing or magical use. Scent can be luminous and illuminating, infusing the air with its olfactory mystique. Perfumery provides easy entry into the mystic arts and you can extend your studies outward from there, for personal transformation and activating your potential life force.

b. Oct. 6, 1935 - d. Dec. 2016
Artist, Magician, Mentor, Master Perfumer
Lady Sara & Yma Sumac
I am Lady Sara, I taught in Los Angeles for many years. I had Stonehenge Shop in Pasadena, California. I also had a mail-order course. Dr. Israel Regardie was my Qabbalah/Golden Dawn teacher. I have been living in the Oregon forest for the last 30 years (writing and doing art).
Hermetic Qabalist and Master Perfumer, Lady Sara has decades of experience in formulating exotic, traditional and personalized scents. Living in Hollywood, she created essences for some of that electric city's "fairest flowers" to complement and balance their energies. Many a starlet attributed her serenity and success to these magical blends.
"It's all in the vibration," Lady Sara explains. After a lifetime of holding these magical secrets fast, she is ready to reveal some of her fascinating techniques and formulas, their sources, and the simple means for creating them.
The olfactory arts are only part of Lady Sara's long artistic arc. Her body of work includes magical paintings, sculptures, unique jewelry, and her forte -- Native American arts. Her skills are so refined, she is also in demand for museum-quality repairs and restorations. Her rattles, drums, gourds, pipes, kachinas and other pieces are a tribute to her Navajo heritage. It honors living in a way that is beautiful, whole and true, energetically, spiritually, even aesthetically. In psychological terms, such an authentic life is also called self-actualization, in spiritual terms self-realization.
Navajo principles of life feature balance and harmony, manifested through honoring the four directions: East (Spiritual), where our thoughts originate; South (Physical), where we set our plans; West (Emotional), where our thoughts and plans are set into motion; and North (Mental/Environmental), where we consider our thoughts and actions to determine if we have remained on the correct path. Working with this energy, one easily learns to walk "the middle way". Echoed in the Hermetic Qabalah, this "Middle Way" is a path of devotion. Art is prayer. Lady Sara sees them as complimentary.
The Navajo "Beauty Way" ceremony embodies beauty, harmony, goodness, normality, success, well-being, blessedness, and happiness -- as a living ideal. During the ceremony, someone wishes to re-establish balance and beauty in their life. Sense of beauty, or balance and harmony may be lost for many reasons. But for the Navajos, the singular cure is to find the way back to Beauty. If you wander off the Beauty Way, then your link to the natural world must be re-established in order to regain it. To Walk in Beauty means being in harmony with all things, people, and events. You connect with inner peace and serenity when polarities are neutralized. One with everything, you walk in Beauty.
Lady Sara brings this "Beautyway" aesthetic to her artwork, perfume alchemy, magical and healing practice. Through it, she recognizes and communicates that the suffering of life is part of the balance. She was an active part of the vibrant esoteric scene in Los Angeles from the 1950s - 1970s, first in Hollywood, and later forming the First Temple of Tiphareth, in Pasadena. Her teachings found their way into many other traditions. Many authors have consulted her for her expertise in psychosensory evocation and healing.
Lady Sara worked as a professional psychic from the mid-80s through the 1990s. Her metaphysical background is extensive. She worked with and studied under many highly esteemed leaders in the field, such as her friends Dr. Israel Regardie, Professor Hans Holzer, William Gray, and Reverend Ann Davies of "The Builders of the Adytum." She taught metaphysics and related subjects for over forty years, and has an international reputation in these fields. In addition, she has authored several books, lectured at various educational institutions, appeared on several television shows and been interviewed in various media.
Lady is a Term of respect for a pagan high priestess of the third degree or higher. Lady Sara was also life-long secretary to Peruvian princess and diva Yma Sumac (1922-2008), the "Sun Virgin", who became an international success for her extreme vocal range, which was well over four octaves. Sara's collection of "The Peruvian Nightengale's" publicity shots is preserved here: http://www.sunvirgin.com/

Lady Sara is widely known for magical perfume and incense blends and as co-founding Vice-President of the "Church of the Eternal Source" (1967-1971) and sole founder of "First Temple of Tiphareth" (1957-1980), in Pasadena, California. The spiritual order was based on the holy Qabalah, dedicated to the Egyptian Mysteries, and patterned after the Egyptian version of the Golden Dawn. Dr. Israel Regardie was her teacher and initiator into this tradition, and as such, he personally consecrated her temple and donated some of his original esoteric paintings (below) to adorn and potentiate it.
Regardie affirmed three purposes of perfumes in ritual to Lady Sara: 1) a means for spirits to manifest making a temporary body from smoke; 2) a pleasing offering or sacrifice through resonating or amplifying each spirit or angel's vibratory frequency; 3) to evoke particular spirits in ritual with formula made from the corresponding letters of its name. They have other specific uses, such as the scent for calling on one's Guardian Angel, which helps stabilize the consciousness of the higher self. Planets, days of the week, angels and demons all have their own perfumes, according to their nature.

The earliest phase of the initiatic process of the first degree is symbolically depicted in a diagram called "The Garden of Eden before the Fall" (shown above). This diagram, which is presented to the initiate in the 3=8 grade of Practicus, represents a stage of primordial innocence. At this stage the candidate typically sees the initiator in an unrealistically positive light as a sort of ideal or perfect parent. In this diagram, Eve, the female figure shown at the bottom of the Tree of Life, represents the ideal mother (and the Qabalistic nephesh or instinctual nature); she is depicted supporting the pillars of Jachin and Boaz. Adam, representing the ideal father (and the Qabalistic ruach or the rational aspect) stands above her with his chest at the station of Tiphareth, arms outstretched towards Chesed and Gevurah.
This diagram represents the bliss of innocence: the candidate is living in a state of bliss because of his or her contact with the "ideal parents" as projected onto the initiator. This process is not unlike Jung's portrayal of falling in love. According to Jung, when men fall in love, they project their own feminine side or anima onto the beloved, while women project the inner masculine, which Jung calls the animus.
The unfolding initiatic process inevitably leads to the situation represented by the diagram entitled "The Garden of Eden after the Fall" (depicted below). This diagram is shown to the candidate during initiation into the 4=7 grade of Philosophus. Here the heads of the dragon arise into consciousness; as shown in the diagram, they attach themselves to the seven lower Sephiroth on the Tree of Life. At this phase the initiate's ego is assaulted by his or her personal complexes. This is a necessary process for the awakening psyche, but it tends to be an unpleasant one. http://auroradorada.com/en/regardie.htm

From 1962 - 1980, she operated L'essence, a personal perfume company, where she created metaphysical perfumes and oils of uncompromising quality and authenticity. Intensive research resulted in this perfume alchemy codex that incorporates the perfume art from ancient Egypt to date. She frequently created personal perfumes for movie stars, as well as creating original formula for larger companies such as Kama Sutra. Her 'Stonehenge' line of incenses and oils was marketed worldwide. Her vast perfumery knowledge was invaluable to Iona Miller in compiling The Magickal & Ritual Use of Perfumes. Her magical 'Oil of Abramelin', for invoking one's Holy Guardian Angel, is arguably the finest in the market.
Lady Sara is also a professional psychic, who has taught alchemy, herbalism, perfume alchemy, sound and color healing, psychic development, creative visualization, subliminal programming, and vibrational therapy. Her artwork and jewelry sold under the Rainbow Shaman brand. From 1971 - 1996 she owned Rainbow Shaman, selling her Native American art and all related products, such as books, lectures, and pathworking tapes, etc. Her shamanic art is sold worldwide in high end galleries. As a practicing shaman in the Navajo Beauty Way, she frequently does private consultations with Native Americans.
She now lives quietly in the wooded hills of Southern Oregon, where she enjoys communing with nature, friends, and animals. It feeds her artistic spirit. She consults and continues teaching the mystic arts. Her recorded Pathworkings were among some of the first such qabalistic guided imagery materials available. A collaboration with physicist Dr. Bob Beck produced a healing tool they dubbed The Mandalascope, a mood-generator for sound/color healing.
Previous works include The Magical Virtues of Candles, Herbs, Incense and Perfume. Glendale, (California): Aleph Books, 1979. Qabalist's Notebook, Arts Magian, The Book of Lights, and more.

Navajo Beauty Way Prayer
In beauty may I walk.
All day long may I walk.
Through the returning seasons may I walk.
On the trail marked with pollen may I walk.
With grasshoppers about my feet may I walk.
With dew about my feet may I walk.
With beauty may I walk.
With beauty before me, may I walk.
With beauty behind me, may I walk.
With beauty above me, may I walk.
With beauty below me, may I walk.
With beauty all around me, may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, living again, may I walk.
It is finished in beauty.
It is finished in beauty.

Perfume Alchemy Workbook
Digital Workbook
Gift of the Spirits
The alchemy of scent is the exclusive topic of this book. Aromatic plants and oils have always been valued and used for their unique properties. Of course, the aesthetic quality of odors is enhanced when their source is purely natural, that is without synthetic additives found in commercial perfumes. All scents prescribed for ancient rituals would have been naturally organic. Essential oils from magical plants form the heart of perfume alchemy.
Ancient initiatory schools and shamanic wisdom traditions of indigenous peoples are the source for the codification of perfume alchemy. Pure essential oils and resins are the material basis of this psychosensory science-art. Scents "feed" the soul; they nourish the imagination. Perfume Alchemy is a subtle energy activation system.
Akasha, the universal Field, extends outward from the Cosmos to deep within the heart. Both heaven and earth are contained within it -- including fire, air, water and earth, both sun and moon, both lightning and stars. From this deep unconscious Source we draw our vital energy, our elan vital. It appears to us as the Voice of the Silence, awakening our psychic senses. If you are receptive, an answer or guidance may come from Sky or Earth or any direction.
Psychological Equilibrium
Initiation opens a communication link between the aspirant and this divine guiding principle -- our inner genius -- fostering balance in the personality as the firm foundation for spiritual development. Maat or 'Balance' was the prime expression of the Egyptian Mystery Schools, because it gave order and meaning to life. In the East, it is called the Tao, a dynamic blending of yin and yang. Balance helps you to achieve the goals you want in life and to manifest your dreams. You can easily integrate this wisdom tradition in your own life. Empowerment comes through grounding and centering, and scents can help us achieve that.
As science has demonstrated, smell is the only sense that acts directly on the brain. The properties of the oils and resins directly stimulate the limbic system or "emotional" part of the brain, modulating the rational blocks to achieving harmony. Scents can make us either more relaxed or more alert. Perfume Alchemy can help you to shift your energy into the energetic form you want or need to be. It can provide a focus on multiple levels: physical, emotional, psychological, or intuitional. Caring for your soul opens an inner resource of great power you can depend upon. You connect with your 'gift of discernment.' We learn to work with our higher selves and with the voices of the ancient ones.
Practicing this wisdom art helps purify and support our energy bodies and fosters holistic health and psychic abilities, including vision and foresight. We leave thought behind for the direct experience of gnosis. It brings a fresh perspective to our understanding of both our inner and outer worlds..Through Perfume Alchemy, the essence or essential nature of each person is "distilled" and refined much like the fragrant soul of the flower or resin is drawn and liberated from the gross botanical matter, purifying and concentrating it. The use of life-enhancing fragrances is easily integrated into any lifestyle.
Perfume of the Stone
Perfumes and incense are also used in conjunction with self-observation, meditation and Qabalistic pathworking. To communicate with the divine realm, it is necessary to understand the inner planes and learn to navigate these without coming under the influence of negative, unbalanced energies. When the mind is stable and quiet, the Voice of the Spirit can be heard; it is the voice of the Intuition, and reveals all true knowledge.
Perfume alchemy, used in conjunction with astrology and other healing arts, can help you identify and pursue your higher purpose and unlock your hidden potential for higher consciousness. Perfume Alchemy supports the balancing and healing process by relieving pain, healing dis-ease, fighting stress and instilling a sense of well being. It produces noticeable effects, subtlely shifting energies and adjusting the whole mindbody hologram through vibratory resonance. Essences can also help you ground and focus your intentionality. In conjunction with ritual, it can open the door to mystical experiences.
Alchemy of Scent
Both alchemy and perfumery are laboratory practices. Many works have dealt with general perfumery; both from the technical as well as the creative standpoints, but none have sought to unravel the mysteries of the art of perfume alchemy. The few Occult or New Age books which do provide planetary, zodiacal, or metaphysical attributions are, for the most part, based on the ancient Doctrine of Signatures or on the Medicinal Herbal Pharmacopoeias of old.
The Doctrine of Signatures is an old system wherein herbs, plants, and flowers were assigned either to Planetary rulership, or to parts of the human anatomy based on the color and shape of the plant; hence a kidney shaped leaf is believed to heal kidney ailments and a red flower is thought to cure blood diseases. The color associations, which are linked to astrology, are even more simplistic. For example, all red flowers belong to Mars; all yellow plants fall under the rulership of the Sun, etc. Coincidentally, some of these attributions have since proved valid, but as with all generalizations, the margin for error is great. This system of attributions, however, has no valid application in perfumery, since it did not have anything to do with scent.
Medicinal attributions are based on the organic principle of the plant and its ingestion as a tonic or tea, but NOT on the fragrance of the plant and the sensory response that the scent elicits. An alchemical essence is formulated to elicit a specific "psycho-sensory, subliminal response". It is not simply an elegant fragrance. The sensory response to a given fragrance dictates the formulation of an incense or perfume. For example: Chamomile when taken as a medicinal tea acts as a mild sedative, while the fragrance of Chamomile when inhaled, acts as a "solar" cerebral stimulant.

Bosch Woodcut: Alchemist & Soror Mystica Distilling Spirits
The Modern Alchemist
There are seven basic operations which typify the major transformations of the alchemical process. The distillation process is one of refinement of the gross into the subtle, whether we speak of the soul or the material elements under transmutation. The operations include: calcinatio, solutio, coagulatio, sublimatio, mortificatio, separatio, and coniunctio. Other major operations include nigredo, albedo, rubedo, solificatio, multiplicatio, projectio, separatio, circulatio, and more. These elemental operations are the protocols for turning the lead of mundane life into philosophical gold.
We can detail the nature of each of these operations later. For now, it is enough to grasp the overview which is best stated by Jung, himself, in Mysterium Coniunctionis: "...the alchemist saw the essence of his art in separation and analysis [solve or solutio] on the one hand and synthesis and consolidation [coagula or coagulatio] on the other. For him there was first of all an initial state in which opposite tendencies or forces were in conflict; secondly, there was the great question of a procedure which would be capable of bringing the hostile elements and qualities, once they were separated, back to unity again.
